Who we are
AHDB, Beef & Lamb, is the levy organisation responsible for beef and sheep in England and exists to enhance the profitability and sustainability of the English beef and lamb sector.
How we operate
AHDB, Beef & Lamb, is funded by a levy on cattle and sheep from farmers and processors collected at the point of slaughter. Our strategy is determined by a Board chaired by a member of the AHDB Board. The R&D programme of AHDB, Beef & Lamb, aims to deliver against the strategic objectives and is overseen by a sub-committee of the Board. EAHDB, Beef & Lamb, funds R&D across a broad range of areas to address industry need, under the following strategic objective:
- R&D delivers practical improvement opportunities.
This R&D is undertaken with other strategic objectives in mind. R&D has a particular role to play in meeting the following additional objectives:
- Implementable ideas are communicated to producers
- Driving sustainable production
With the R&D programme AHDb, Beef & Lamb, funds postgraduate students for two main reasons:
- to deliver cost-effective research of relevance to the priorities
- to contribute to a body of qualified people available to deliver science and technology for the ruminant livestock and meat sector
Typically three PhD student projects are started each year, normally with 3 years funding, resulting in nine full time students at any one time. These are jointly funded with other organisations where appropriate.
The research undertaken within the studentship programme will be required to address aspects of the R&D strategy, with specific priorities identified by the R&D team in collaboration with the co-funders of the students on an annual basis. An annual call is issued with details of these priorities.

AHDB, Beef & Lamb, also funds a portfolio of research projects. For details of current calls for proposals please see our website.
